2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

Ingestion causes pain in mouth and throat and irritation to the mucous membranes.

Eye

Severely irritating. Risk of serious damage to eyes. Eye contact causes irritation and pain, possibly resulting in permanent injury and/or loss of vision.

Skin

Irritating to skin. Skin contact in combination with humidity can cause irritation and pain.

Inhaled

Irritating to respiratory system. Inhalation of dust can cause pain in nose and throat, sneezing and coughing and irritation to the mucous membranes.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

Dissolution in water results in a liquid of pH approx 11-13 chich is corrosive to eyes and irritating to skin. Toxic effects of the product are caused by the alkalinity and not by substance specific systemic effects.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

Only when conscious, rinse mouth, give plenty of water to drink (approx 500 ml). DO NOT induce vomiting. Seek medical advice.

Eye

Thoroughly rinse immediately with water for a minimum fo 15 minutes. Eyelids should be held away from the eyeball to ensure thorough rinsing. Always seek medical attention.

Skin

Remove all contaminated clothing immediately. Wash off with plenty of soap and water. Seek medical advice if irritation develops. Launder clothes before reuse.

Inhaled

In all cases of doubt, or when symptoms persist, seek medical attention. Move to fresh air, rest, half upright position, loosen clothing. Seek medical advice if irritation develops.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Treat symptomatically based on individual reactions of patient and judgement of doctor. Eye injury required an immediate and thorough rinsing with water. Contact an eye specialist.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral (rat) LD50: 1300-2200 mg/kg. The LD50 value is therefore of no practical significance due to the corrosive nature of the product.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

Sodium silicate OES - TWA = 5.0 mg/m3 (respirable dust).

3.2 Engineering Controls

Working areas and methods should be organized in such a way that direct contact is avoided. Avoid generating dusts. Areas in which handling generates dusts should have adequate ventilation equipment to minimze exposure to personnel.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratpry protection - in case of dust formation use suitable respiratory equipmnet (respirator with filter P2). Skin protection - wear protective gloves and suitable clothing. Eye protection - wear tightly fitting safety goggles.

3.4 Flammability

Not combustible.

SAFE HANDLING INFORMATION

4.1 Storage / Transport

The product is hygroscopic and may form lumps. Store in a dry and cool place. Keep the original package or container closed when not in use. Avoid light metal and its alloys, galvanised material. Avoid contact with humidity and carbon dioxide. Avoid contact with certain metals (e.g aluminium, tin, zinc and their alloys).

4.2 Packaging / Labelling

UN No. N/A

Class None Allocated

Sub Risk None Allocated

Hazchem Code N/A

Pack Group 0

EPG No. N/A

Shipping Name SODIUM SILICATE

Hazard IRRITANT

Risk Phrases

R37/38 Irritating to respiratory system and skin.

R41 Risk of serious damage to eyes.

Safety Phrases

S22 Do not breathe dust.

S26 In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

S36/37/39 Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean up personnel should wear full protective clothing including respiratory protection. Do not allow spilled material to enter drains or water courses. In case of large spillages, contact the local authority.

Collect as much spilled material as possible in a clean container for (preferable) reuse or disposal. Flush remainder with water.

Disposal

Dispose according to all local, state, and federal regulations. Empty containers which cannot be cleaned should be disposed of in the same manner as the product.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Not combustible. Corrosive sodium oxide vapours may be generated at high temperatures. Avoid contain with certain metals (e.g aluminium, tin, zinc and their alloys). Can generate hydrogen gas, which can form explosive mixtures with air. Avoid contact with acids. Avoid contact with humidity and carbon dioxide.

Extinguishing Media

Firefighters should wear full protective clothing including self contained breathing apparatus. Use extinguishing media suitable to surrounding fire conditions.

5 OTHER INFORMATION

Other Information

LC50 96h (Brachydanio rerio, OECD no 203) = 3185 mg/l (Mol. ratio 3.36, conc. 35%, pH 10.1) EC50 48h (Daphnia magna) = 4857 mg/l (Mol. ratio 3.2, conc. 35%) ECO 48h (Bacteria) = > 1000 mg/l (conc. 35%, pH 7.9) Degradation abiotic - In an aqueous solution of pH = < 9 the silicate is mineralised and precipitated. The maximum concentration of soluble silicates, at this pH, is 120 mg/l. Degradation biotic - not applicable (in organic product) The pH rise is responisble for the environment effect on the aquatic life. If not neitralised, this product can be toxic for aquatic organism because of its alkalinity. pH > 9 has a corrosive effect on fish (possibly causing death). pH > 8.5 will result in destruction of algae.
